Luke Elliot's "Death of a Widow" Released today

Today sees the release of the new digital EP by Luke Elliot "Death of a Widow".  Luke continues on his journey from the aforementioned "bluesy" piano ballads through rambling heartache and distaster.  You may find Luke settling into his niche quite well through these five songs, capped with the raw emotion of it's title track.

You can stream Luke's "When That Great Ship Went Down" that is also on our label compilation "Folk Music For What Lies Ahead" on our SoundCloud page by visiting here.

Pre-Order Luke Elliot's "Death of a Widow" now!

Did you think that we had nothing but our compilation in the works?

Well our very own troubadour Luke Elliot has been hard at work recording another EP of music that will see it's official release on August 10th 24th, 2010.  I say "official" because you have the opportunity to pick up the 5 track EP for $4.00 when purchased prior to the release day when it moves to $5.00 per digital copy.

Tracklisting

  1. Get 'em While They're Hot
  2. When That Great Ship Went Down
  3. Thing to Thing
  4. The World ain't a Friend of Mine
  5. Death of a Widow

If you are not sure about a purchase or if you are looking for a little look into the EP, look no further than a recent post on Awaiting The Flood:

"You don’t so much listen to Luke Elliot’s music as you absorb it — almost like a steaming aural shower that washes over you, and it stings a bit."

That is just the opener, how about:

"Overall, Death of A Widow has a dusty, timeless quality like that of roaming balladeers, buskers, honky tonk saloon piano players, and this is especially prevalent on the title track. Elliot covers so much ground here that it’s difficult to keep up, but the song is swaddled in melodies befitting a religious hymn. Again, with repeated listenings you pick up little gems here and there. It helps, too, that he’s backed by some amazing New York City musicians: Richard Russano (electric guitar), Ryan Stokes (drums, accordion, trumpet), Ben Fleisher (bass) and Mike Skaggs (bass)."

Saturday Compilation update

Well a day late on this one, sorry folks!

We have another 2 artists to update you on for our "Folk Music For What Lies Ahead" compilation due out this summer, both with Yer Bird Record connections.

Firstly we have our Yer Bird Records resident story telling troubadour;

Luke Elliot!  Luke has provided an unreleased song to add to the compilation and once again takes you on a journey, this time with a tragic ending.  Some might say it is a story that might have had no other ending, but this isn't a dark tragedy, but more a story of events brought to fruition with his patented performance.  This one comes in almost as if it is a knee slapping ballad brought forth with (at times) furious acoustic guitar, electric accents and with accordion for good measure.  You don't want to miss it!

~~

We are also proud to bring flecks of our previous compilation in both artist and sound:

Blood Warrior!  If you don't know already, last compilation featured O'Death - so it is fitting that this time we bring you Greg Jamie (of O'Death) and his fantastic new gothic folk band to this release.  We have preached to this in the past but the term "folk" goes for miles and Blood Warrior holds a strong place in this genre for us.  Think of a Southern gospel gone slightly awry, then got a soundtrack.  This stuff is the kind of music you dig your teeth into, layers of screeching, howling and hooks bound together with an often driving beat and Jamie's voice above it all.  This will be a band to watch (if you aren't already).

Aren't ya all getting excited?  We are!

Luke Elliot & Hezekiah Jones

What the hell has been going on with Yer Bird?

Well, we've relocated finally!  To Philadelphia and are in a bit of a state of flux. We're still trying to figure out the fate of The Aviary experiment, and really what direction to move towards as the record industry transforms itself into something much more dynamic.

While all that is going, I'm excited to present 2 new records to the catalog - "Bread of Teeth", the amazing new EP by Hezekiah Jones and "In Our Embrace", the debut full-length by the astounding songwriter Luke Elliot. Check out their individual album pages to the right!
